How to Recover From Failure Fast

How to Recover From Failure FAST

Failing SUCKS! Feeling like a failure will bring you down, but that doesn't mean you can't get back up again... FAST!

All entrepreneurs and personal development junkies have all heard advice like, "Fail often," "Failure is a good thing, embrace it," "You will fail more than you succeed on your way to your goals."

None of those make failing feel any better!  But, as I will discuss below, there are ways we can pull ourselves up, get back into action and learn from our failures... even though going through failure will continue to SUCK, forever!

This Guide Is For You If...

You are looking for purpose in your life... I was too! I took ALL the action, but fell flat!

So, I did the research, found the experts in this field, did what they said, dug down deep and I found my purpose!

Do you want the exact steps I went through and questions I answered to:

  • Dig deep into understanding myself
  • Understand the value of my past experience
  • Define my own personal strengths and gifts…
  • And was able to nail down my true and definite purpose for being on this planet?

Defining Failure

Firsly, how do you define failure? To me the word means devastation, like something so major it severely effects your life. You may call a devastating failure, “rock bottom.”

Even if a failure is complete and total rock bottom, you can still rise up and keep going, I believe complete failure is quitting.

The failure I have come up against is no-where near devastating.

What I want to tell you about is more of a set back…

Set-backs happen along the path to your dreams, happen in pursuit of your best life and they will happen a lot!

There may even been a number of devastating failures along that path, but if something is worth fighting for through those setbacks and failures, if you can get back up after falling no matter how shitty it feels, how much it hurts, how embarrassing it is… You have to do it!

My Most Recent Failure

So… I committed to do something, to go for a huge goal, that would have aligned me to a big goal I had for this year, but it’s not working!

I bit off more than I could chew… that’s for sure.

The goal was to write, edit and publish, a blog post as well as record, edit, render, upload and promote a YouTube video a day for 40 days. I got up to 10 days, but it was not working!

I was staying up till midnight and later each night to get it done. I wasn’t able to put my best work forward, couldn’t do what I needed to to promote it, put it in front of eyeballs. I was getting totally stressed, fell behind in other areas, missed workouts and a lot of sleep.

Although the goal felt aligned at the time… the stress was not in alignment, and I was not in joy or flow while doing the work… it was struggle.

But admitting defeat on another challenge I had set for myself… oh man that was hard and it made me more upset than actually doing the hard work and losing the sleep! I did not want to admit failure!

Turning inward and asking if this was the right action… I had to admit, no… it was not.

Rather than totally beating myself up about it, I spent some time re-evaluating and I will start again with a different schedule, a clear plan, and give myself the space to take action that feels aligned… cause what’s the point of all this without alignment?

Facing Failure and Bouncing Back

Here are the steps I have followed and will follow to rebound from this set back…

1. Take Ownership

Entrepreneur Magazine has some great tips. One that I think is most important is to take ownership. As much as some things are out of our control, we are the only person who controls our outcomes in life.

Take ownership for 2 things:

1. Of the actual failure… did you set your sites to high (me!) did you not give it your best, did you actually royally screw up? If it’s your life, you played a part… own it before anything else.

2. Accept ownership over what you do about it. Tell people you messed up. Hiding in shame won’t help, showing you have the courage to own up shows your character and commands respect, and can help people forgive you if you want to ask them for that too.

2. Learn From The Experience

Those shitty feelings you have, feel them… honor them. This study found that trying to just learn by thinking through your failure, trying to distance yourself from it won’t help your improvement next time, but if you feel the emotions of the failure you are likely to have better learning and effort on the next task.

But there must be a limit on that, feeling harshly critical emotions can propel you forward, but getting stuck in them could be more problematic.

I believe you cannot hold the strong detrimental emotion at the same time as you take the lesson, when you take the learnings, you release the emotion and makes it easier to move past the pain.

3. Regroup And Do The Mindset Work

This is the mindset work part…

Sit in quiet and ask yourself, or grab your journal and answer these questions. Journaling helps you brain-dump all your ideas and see your thoughts on paper. Something I love doing is sit in quiet, stillness, if meditation is something you do, do that…. Then right after grab your journal and have at it!

What went wrong?

How did it go wrong and how can I do better next time?

What is aligned for me to do right now? Aligned meaning what feels the most right, right now? What is my soul, God, the Universe leading me to do right now as a result of this set back?

When you have an answer to that last question, you know what you gotta do!

4. Get Back On The Wagon

So you have found the aligned action… get to it! Act now, don’t wait creative ideas fade fast, inspiration is fleeting… especially after a set-back. If you can find momentum quickly you will crush it!

If what you are working for is something you want more than you want to breathe… as Socrates said,  “When you want wisdom and insight as badly as you want to breathe, it is then you shall have it.” Eric Thomas adapted this thought to fit our exact conversation…

5. NEVER GIVE UP

Giving up is the only fully true way to fail! You can't recover from giving up... Just don't stop going after what you know you is yours.
